Looking Up: Your Place in the Cosmos

How big is everything, and where exactly do you fit in it? A wonder-first opener with almost no math.

Before we build telescopes, decode starlight, or rewind the universe to its first second, we start with something everyone can do: step outside and look up.

This first module has one job — to make you feel the sheer scale of the universe and find your place in it. No heavy math, no jargon. Just wonder, and the mental toolkit you'll use for the rest of the course. Think of it as packing for the road trip: the destination is the edge of the observable universe, and these lessons are the map and the rules of the road.

What you'll carry out of this section

  • A gut-level feel for cosmic scale, built from everyday objects.
  • The ability to find planets, constellations, and the Milky Way in a real sky.
  • Your complete cosmic address, smallest to largest.
  • An intuitive grip on the light-year — a distance that is also a look-back in time.
