Galaxies and the Grand Design

How do a hundred billion stars arrange themselves — and how do we measure distances we can never travel?

We've followed stars from birth to death. Now we zoom out one more giant step and ask how all those stars organize themselves. The answer is galaxies — vast, gravity-bound cities of hundreds of billions of suns. We'll map our own Milky Way from the inside (no easy task when you're stuck within it), dive to the four-million-Sun black hole at its heart, step outside to meet the whole zoo of other galaxies and watch them collide, and finally crack the question that has haunted the whole course: how do we measure distances we can never travel?

The module opens with the second milestone Zoom-Out Review to lock in everything from Modules 1 through 5 — and it sets up the two great mysteries waiting in Module 7.

What you'll carry out of this section

  • A refreshed grip on Modules 1 through 5, in the second milestone Zoom-Out Review.
  • The structure of our Milky Way and our place in it.
  • The supermassive black hole at the galaxy's heart, and how we see the invisible.
  • The types of galaxies, and how they collide, merge, and grow.
  • The cosmic distance ladder — how we measure the unreachable, and the key to everything that follows.
