Are We Alone, How Does It End, and What's Next?

Is anyone else out there, how does it all end, and how will we keep finding out? The journey ends where it began.

This is the finale. We began standing on Earth, looking up, learning our cosmic address. We've since traveled out to the edge of the observable universe and back to the first instant of time. Now, armed with everything you've learned, we ask the deepest and most human questions of all — and then come home.

Are we alone? We'll hunt for other worlds (the galaxy turns out to be full of them), weigh the odds of cosmic company with the Drake Equation and the eerie Great Silence, follow the universe all the way to its far-future fate, and meet the new eyes — from Webb to gravitational-wave detectors — carrying the story forward. And we end where we began: looking back at the Pale Blue Dot, our entire world reduced to a single speck in a sunbeam, except that now you understand exactly what you're seeing.

What you'll carry out of this section

  • How we find and study exoplanets, and what the habitable zone means.
  • The Drake Equation and the Fermi Paradox — how to think honestly about cosmic company.
  • The far-future fate of the Sun and the universe, told with wonder rather than dread.
  • The new observatories carrying astronomy forward, and the Pale Blue Dot perspective that ties the whole course together.
